Know who you are! Don't sell yourself short! Haitian living in the U.S. should not be confused or disillusioned like a dizzy Haitian by the name of "Friend of Haiti". The U.S. is a melting pot. If all generation of immigrants living in the U.S. were to go back to their countries of origin, there would have been no one left here but the Indians also known as Native Americans. Haitians and Haitian-Americans living in the U.S. should never believe that the U.S. is doing them a favor. On the contrary, the U.S. should be grateful to the Haitians. I can go even further. The U.S. should pay Haiti reparation for its historic role in destabilizing Haiti, just as we are seeing today. Even the presidential candidate John Kerry said during the presidential campaign that "Bush empowered the insurgents in Haiti" to create chaos. When they inflict so much pain on a nation, when they cause the loss of so many innocent lives, don't you think they owe us reparation? Where is justice? While the Haitian and Haitian-Americans are working hard to make the U.S. a better place, Bush on the other hand is doing all that he can to turn Haiti into hell. Haiti deserves better than that, to think otherewise would be condescending. We have earned our place here like any other group of immigrants. Our ancestors saved the U.S. Revolution in Savannah, Georgia in 1779. We work hard here. We pay taxes. We produce physicians, lawyers, engineers, architects, musicians, artists, teachers, computer analysts, bankers, accountants, nurses, entertainers, actors/actresses, athletes, superstars, taxi drivers, home owners, nurse's aids, police officers, technicians, judges, elected officials, business owners, factory workers, etc.. We have students at all grade levels, high schools, university, etc. Some of us died in war fighting on behalf of U.S.A.(even though most of these wars are questionable). Some of us assume big responsibility in public offices as well as in the private sector. We are a very productive group of people. Don't walk with your head down thinking that they are just doing you a favor here. We have contributed greatly to keep this country running. One can not argue the fact that Bush has turned Haiti into hell. There are Haitian and Haitian-Americans here who work hard their entire life and would like to go to back to Haiti, but they can't. They are trapped here. Some of them live in cold temperature during the winter in New York, Boston, etc... When you think deeply, you will realize as they say in creole "Se pa nou ki sou do bef la, se bef la ki sou do nou". Just like the Jews, the Irish, the Italians,etc... whether they were born here or not, they are always proud to go back to their country of origin. We have a country too. Haiti is not for sale. Walk with your head high. We should continue to resist the current Latortue regime of thugs that have hijacked Haiti where people are being kidnapped, raped and executed. Haitians should be able to go to back to Haiti to either reside or vacation. No Haitian should be deprived of his/her land or live in exile. Haiti is for the Haitians. Our ancestors broke the chains of slavery, fought victoriously bloody battles to create this superb nation. Wake up Haitians! Wake up! Stand up for your rights. Dont' give up the fight! Happy New Year 2006 ! G. Simon
